Defining Data: Types, Variables and Classes
Reference types, objects and null
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Reference type, value null and wrapper class.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
In Java, after the statement String s = new String("Ali"); what does the variable s actually contain?
What are three reference types a Java programmer can use without writing a class?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a reference type?
Model answer
A reference type is a type whose variable holds a reference to an object held elsewhere in memory, rather than holding the data itself.
- 2
What is the essential difference between what a primitive variable holds and what a reference variable holds?
Model answer
A primitive variable holds the value directly in its own storage, while a reference variable holds the location of an object and the object's data lives separately.
- 3
In Java, after the statement String s = new String("Ali"); what does the variable s actually contain?
Model answer
The variable s contains a reference to a String object created in memory, and the characters A, l and i are held inside that object rather than in s.
- 4
What are three reference types a Java programmer can use without writing a class?
Model answer
String, arrays and the wrapper class Integer are all reference types supplied with the language, as are library classes such as Scanner.
- 5
What does the value null mean?
Model answer
The value null means that a reference variable currently refers to no object at all.
- 6
What happens when a program calls a method on a reference variable whose value is null?
Model answer
A null reference has no object behind it, so the call fails at run time and Java throws a NullPointerException.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Defining Data: Types, Variables and Classes, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
