Writing a test plan for a class
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
What each entry states, choosing data for every method and every path, testing the constructor and the state it leaves, and writing the expected result before anything is run.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name six columns a test plan table should carry.
Why does every test in the plan need a number?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a test plan?
Model answer
A test plan is a written table of the tests to be carried out, each stating what is being tested, the data to be used and the result expected, all prepared before any test is run.
- 2
Name six columns a test plan table should carry.
Model answer
A workable table carries a test number, the purpose of the test, the method being exercised, the data used, the expected result and the actual result.
- 3
Why does every test in the plan need a number?
Model answer
A number gives each test a name that can be quoted in a fault report, in a retest and in the record of results, so there is never any doubt which test is meant.
- 4
Why must the expected result be written down before the test is run?
Model answer
A result settled in advance comes from the requirement, while a result written afterwards is copied from the output and would agree with the program however wrong the program was.
- 5
What should the purpose column of a test plan say?
Model answer
The purpose states in a few words what the test is meant to establish, such as that a negative mark is refused, so a reader can see why the test exists at all.
- 6
Which extra column becomes useful once results are being recorded?
Model answer
A column for the action taken is useful, recording the correction made after a failure and the number of the test that afterwards proved the correction worked.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Testing an Object Oriented Application, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
