Black box testing
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Black box testing, equivalence partitioning and boundary value analysis.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a decision table used for in test design?
A field accepts whole numbers from 1 to 100. Name the equivalence partitions and give one value from each.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is black box testing?
Model answer
Black box testing designs the tests from the specification alone, supplying inputs and comparing the outputs with what was promised, without any knowledge of how the code inside works.
- 2
Why is black box testing also called functional testing?
Model answer
Black box testing is called functional because it checks the functions the system is supposed to perform, judging only what goes in and what comes out.
- 3
Give two advantages of black box testing.
Model answer
Black box testing can be designed before the code is written and by someone who cannot program, and it tests what the user was promised rather than what the developer happened to build.
- 4
State two things black box testing cannot detect.
Model answer
Black box testing cannot detect unreachable code inside the program, and it cannot show that a correct answer was reached by a route that will fail on data nobody thought to try.
- 5
What is equivalence partitioning?
Model answer
Equivalence partitioning divides the possible inputs into groups the program should treat identically, so that testing one value from each group is taken to represent every value in it.
- 6
A field accepts whole numbers from 1 to 100. Name the equivalence partitions and give one value from each.
Model answer
The partitions are values below the range, values within it and values above it, represented by −5, 50 and 150 respectively, with non-numeric input forming a further invalid partition.

Every question in Testing Strategies, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
