Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is Buddhist chanting?
Model answer
Buddhist chanting is the rhythmic recitation of texts, verses or phrases, often in a group. Buddhist chanting serves both as devotion and as a way to focus the mind.
- 2
Why do Buddhists chant as an act of devotion?
Model answer
Devotional chanting expresses respect and gratitude to the Three Jewels. The chanted words remind Buddhists of the qualities of the Buddha.
- 3
How does chanting help mental concentration?
Model answer
The rhythm and repetition of a chant hold attention and quieten wandering thoughts. A chant can prepare the mind for meditation.
- 4
What does Dhammapada 1–2 teach?
Model answer
Dhammapada 1–2 teaches that the mind comes first and shapes every action. An impure mind brings suffering, as a cart wheel follows an ox. A pure mind brings happiness, like a shadow that never leaves.
- 5
How does Dhammapada 1–2 explain why Buddhists chant?
Model answer
A chant fills the mind with wholesome thoughts. The Dhammapada teaches that a mind purified in this way brings happiness.
- 6
How can chanting bring confidence and joy?
Model answer
Group chanting builds confidence, or saddha, in the Buddha's teaching. Many Buddhists find that chanting fills them with a calm joy.
