- 3 things to know
- Any of the three papers
Overview
Avidya and jnana, karma as an explanation, ahimsa, self-control, empathy and humility, Vidura's rule of conduct in Mahabharata 5.39, and how Vaishnavas, Advaita Hindus and Shaiva Siddhanta explain suffering.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What do Hindus mean by avidya?
How does knowledge (jnana) end suffering?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What do many Hindus teach is the root cause of suffering?
Model answer
Many Hindus teach that suffering comes from ignorance of the true self. People mistake the body for the self and cling to passing things.
- 2
What do Hindus mean by avidya?
Model answer
Avidya is spiritual ignorance of one's true nature as the atman. Avidya binds the self to samsara.
- 3
How does knowledge (jnana) end suffering?
Model answer
Knowledge reveals that the atman is eternal and untouched by pain. The self that knows this is freed from fear and desire.
- 4
How does karma explain suffering for Hindus?
Model answer
Suffering is the result of harmful actions in this life or earlier lives. Suffering is not a punishment sent at random by God.
- 5
How does ahimsa respond to the suffering of others?
Model answer
Ahimsa means non-violence, avoiding harm to any living being. A Hindu who practises ahimsa reduces suffering in word, thought and deed.
- 6
Why is control of the mind and senses taught as a response to suffering?
Model answer
Uncontrolled senses chase pleasures that end in disappointment. A controlled mind stays calm in both pleasure and pain.
