What do Hindus mean by peace (shanti)?
Model answer
Shanti is peace, both inner calm and harmony between people. Hindus often end prayers by chanting “Om shanti, shanti, shanti”.
- 2
Why do Hindus chant shanti three times?
Model answer
The chant asks for freedom from three kinds of disturbance: from within, from other beings and from natural forces.
- 3

Peace allows people to follow dharma and seek moksha. Violence creates bad karma and disturbs the mind.
- 4
What does Bhagavad Gita 2.66 teach about peace?
Model answer
Krishna teaches that the unsteady mind has no wisdom, and without meditation there is no peace. Without peace, there can be no happiness.
- 5
What does Bhagavad Gita 2.65 say about inner calm?
Model answer
Bhagavad Gita 2.65 teaches that all sorrows end when the mind is serene. The intellect of the calm person soon becomes steady.
- 6
What does Bhagavad Gita 2.67 say about the senses and peace?
Model answer
A mind that follows the wandering senses loses its wisdom. The senses carry the mind away like wind driving a ship on the water.
