Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is the difference between prejudice and discrimination?

    Model answer

Prejudice is an unfair opinion formed about a person or group without good reason. Discrimination is acting on prejudice by treating people unfairly.

  2. 2

What problems do prejudice and discrimination cause?

    Model answer

Prejudice and discrimination cause fear, exclusion and lost opportunities for their victims. Discrimination can lead to violence and divide communities.

  3. 3

What does the Catechism (1934) teach about human equality?

    Model answer

The Catechism says all people share the same nature and origin, created in the image of the one God. Redeemed by Christ, all are called to the same eternal happiness and so have equal dignity.

  4. 4

What does the Catechism (1935) teach about discrimination?

    Model answer

The Catechism says discrimination on grounds of sex, race, colour, social conditions, language or religion must be eradicated. Discrimination is incompatible with God's design.

  5. 5

Why do Catholics believe prejudice and discrimination against religions is wrong?

    Model answer

Every person has the God-given right to religious freedom and equal dignity. An attack on someone's faith is an attack on their conscience and their relationship with God.

  6. 6

How has the Catholic Church rejected antisemitism?

    Model answer

The Second Vatican Council's Nostra Aetate (1965) condemned antisemitism and taught that Jews are not collectively guilty of Christ's death. Pope John Paul II called the Jewish people Christians' “elder brothers”.
