Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What do Catholics mean by peace?
Model answer
Peace is not merely the absence of war but a state of justice, harmony and right relationships. The Catechism calls peace “the tranquillity of order”, following St Augustine.
- 2
Why is peace important for Catholics?
Model answer
God wants all people to live in harmony as one human family. Peace allows every person to flourish and live with dignity.
- 3
How does the biblical idea of shalom shape the Catholic understanding of peace?
Model answer
Shalom means wholeness and well-being, not just the absence of fighting. Catholics see true peace as right relationships with God, others and creation.
- 4
What did Pope John XXIII teach in Pacem in Terris (1963)?
Model answer
Pacem in Terris teaches that peace must be built on truth, justice, love and freedom. The encyclical was addressed to all people of good will, not just Catholics.
- 5
What does Gaudium et Spes teach about peace?
Model answer
The Second Vatican Council taught that peace is “the work of justice”. Peace must be built constantly and is never achieved once and for all.
- 6
What is the World Day of Peace?
Model answer
The World Day of Peace is kept by the Catholic Church every 1 January. Pope Paul VI began it in 1968, and each year the Pope issues a message on peace.
