What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How do many Jews respond to the theory that humans evolved by natural selection?
What does Genesis 1:26–27 add to scientific accounts of human origins?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How do many Jews respond to the theory that humans evolved by natural selection?
Model answer
Many Jews accept evolution as the process the Almighty used to create life. Genesis tells why humans exist, while science explains how they developed.
- 2
What does Genesis 1:26–27 add to scientific accounts of human origins?
Model answer
Genesis 1:26–27 says humans alone are made in God's image. Jews believe this gives humans a soul and moral responsibility that biology cannot explain.
- 3
Why do some Haredi Jews reject evolution?
Model answer
Some Haredi Jews believe Genesis 1:26–31 describes God creating humans directly. Human evolution from other animals seems to contradict this and to deny humans' special status.
- 4
How did Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook respond to evolution?
Model answer
Rabbi Kook, Chief Rabbi in Palestine, saw evolution as fitting Jewish mystical ideas of a world rising towards perfection. Evolution need not threaten faith.
- 5
What non-religious conclusion do some atheists draw from evolution?
Model answer
Some atheists, such as Richard Dawkins, argue evolution shows that life needs no designer or God. Humans are then seen as highly developed animals.
- 6
How might a Jew respond to the claim that evolution disproves God?
Model answer
A Jew might argue that evolution explains how life develops but not why there is life at all. The laws that allow evolution could themselves come from God.
