- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
The resurrection, Ephesians 2 on new life and the ages to come, Jesus's promise to the criminal, remembered lives and the paranormal, mediums, and the logical, reward, comfort and reunion arguments.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does Ephesians 2:1–6 teach about new life in Christ?
What does Ephesians 2:7–10 promise about the ages to come?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why does the resurrection of Jesus lead Catholics to believe in life after death?
Model answer
Catholics believe Jesus rose from the dead and appeared to many witnesses. The victory of Jesus over death shows that death is not the end for his followers.
- 2
What does Ephesians 2:1–6 teach about new life in Christ?
Model answer
Paul says believers were dead in their sins but God, rich in mercy, made them alive with Christ. God has raised them up and seated them with Christ in the heavenly places.
- 3
What does Ephesians 2:7–10 promise about the ages to come?
Model answer
God will show the immeasurable riches of his grace in the ages to come. Catholics read the promise as pointing to eternal life with Christ.
- 4
What did Jesus promise the criminal crucified beside him?
Model answer
Jesus said, “Today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). Catholics see the promise as evidence that life continues after death.
- 5
What are remembered lives, and how do Catholics respond to them?
Model answer
Remembered lives are claims that people, often children, recall details of a past life. Catholics reject reincarnation, believing each person lives and dies only once (Hebrews 9:27).
- 6
What paranormal evidence do some people give for life after death?
Model answer
Some people point to ghosts, to mediums who claim to contact the dead, and to near-death experiences. Near-death experiences often involve seeing a bright light and feeling deep peace.
