- 1
What is sawm?

- 2
What does Surah 2:183 teach about the purpose of fasting?
Model answer
Surah 2:183 says fasting was prescribed for Muslims as it was for earlier peoples. Fasting is meant to build taqwa, awareness of Allah.
- 3
What does Surah 2:185 teach about Ramadan?
Model answer
Surah 2:185 says Ramadan is the month in which the Qur'an was sent down as guidance. Allah intends ease for believers, not hardship.
- 4
Who is excused from fasting during Ramadan?
Model answer
Children, the sick, the elderly, travellers, and pregnant, breastfeeding or menstruating women are excused.
- 5
Why are some people excused from fasting?
Model answer
Allah does not want fasting to harm health or cause undue hardship. Surah 2:184 allows the sick and travellers to make up missed days later.

Fidya is feeding a poor person for each missed fast by someone who can never make it up. The elderly and chronically ill pay fidya.
