Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are Maimonides' Thirteen Principles of the Jewish Faith?
Model answer
The Thirteen Principles are Maimonides' summary of the core beliefs of Judaism. Many Orthodox Jews recite them daily in the form beginning Ani Ma'amin, “I believe”.
- 2
Which of Maimonides' principles support belief in life after death?
Model answer
The thirteenth principle states that God will resurrect the dead. The eleventh principle states that God rewards those who keep the commandments and punishes those who break them.
- 3
How does belief in God's justice argue for life after death?
Model answer
The righteous often suffer and the wicked prosper in this life. A just God must put this right after death, rewarding the good.
- 4
What logical argument for life after death do some Jews use?
Model answer
The soul is non-physical and comes from God, so it need not die with the body. The God who gave the soul can keep it in existence.
- 5
How can the hope of meeting loved ones support belief in life after death?
Model answer
The Torah says Abraham was “gathered to his people” when he died. Many Jews take comfort in hoping to be reunited with family in the world to come.
- 6
Why is comfort one reason some Jews believe in life after death?
Model answer
Belief in life after death eases grief and the fear of dying. Jews also feel a continuing bond with the dead through prayer for them.
