Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What do Catholics mean by revelation?

    Model answer

Revelation is God making himself and his will known to human beings. Catholics believe humans could not fully know God unless God revealed himself.

  2. 2

What is the difference between general and special revelation?

    Model answer

General revelation is God made known through nature, reason and conscience, open to everyone. Special revelation is God made known in particular events, such as scripture, visions and above all Jesus.

  3. 3

Why do Catholics see Jesus as the culmination of God's revelation?

    Model answer

Catholics believe Jesus is God in human form, so in him God reveals himself completely. The Catechism calls Christ the Father's one, perfect and unsurpassable Word.

  4. 4

What does Dei Verbum teach about revelation?

    Model answer

Vatican II's Dei Verbum (1965) teaches that God's revelation is handed on through scripture and tradition. Christ is both the mediator and the fullness of all revelation.

  5. 5

What does Hebrews 1:1 say about how God spoke in the past?

    Model answer

Hebrews 1:1 says God spoke in many and various ways to the ancestors through the prophets. The messages of the prophets were partial and prepared for Christ.

  6. 6

What does Hebrews 1:2 say about how God has spoken now?

    Model answer

Hebrews 1:2 says that in these last days God has spoken through a Son. God made the Son heir of all things and created the universe through him.
