Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is family planning, and why might a Hindu couple use it?
Model answer
Family planning is choosing how many children to have and when. A Hindu couple may use it to care properly for the children they have.
- 2
What do Hindu scriptures say directly about contraception?
Model answer
Hindu scriptures give no direct ruling on modern contraception. Hindus apply wider principles such as ahimsa, dharma and duty to children.
- 3
How does the householder stage affect Hindu attitudes to family planning?
Model answer
The householder has a duty to have children and continue the family. The householder must also be able to feed and educate them.
- 4
Why do many Hindus accept contraception?
Model answer
Contraception lets couples have the number of children they can care for properly. Contraception that prevents conception does not destroy a life.
- 5
Why do some Hindus prefer self-control to contraception?
Model answer
Some Hindus teach that sex should be for procreation and desire must be controlled. ISKCON encourages married couples to limit sex to having children.
- 6
What was Gandhi's view of artificial contraception?
Model answer
Gandhi opposed artificial contraception and argued for self-control instead. Gandhi believed restraint strengthens character.
