Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does jihad mean?
Model answer
Jihad means 'striving' or 'struggling' in the way of Allah. The word does not simply mean war.
- 2
What is greater jihad?
Model answer
Greater jihad is the personal struggle to live as a good Muslim and resist temptation. Muslims see greater jihad as a lifelong inner effort.
- 3
What is lesser jihad?
Model answer
Lesser jihad is the outward struggle to defend Islam, which can include fighting in a just war. The Qur'an sets strict limits on it.
- 4
What are the origins of jihad?
Model answer
Jihad began in Muhammad's time, when early Muslims faced persecution in Makkah. Fighting was first permitted after the move to Madinah, to defend the community.
- 5
What does Surah 22:39 teach?
Model answer
Surah 22:39 gives permission to fight to those who are attacked, because they have been wronged. Muslims see it as the first verse allowing armed self-defence.
- 6
What does Surah 2:190 teach about fighting?
Model answer
Surah 2:190 commands fighting only those who fight you, without transgressing limits. Allah does not love those who begin aggression.
