Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What do Buddhists see as the causes of conflict?
Model answer
Buddhists trace conflict to greed, hatred and delusion in the human mind. Wars over land, wealth or power grow from these roots.
- 2
What does Itivuttaka 50 teach?
Model answer
Itivuttaka 50 names three roots of unskilful action: greed, aversion and delusion. The three roots destroy a person from within, as a bamboo is killed by its own fruit.
- 3
How does greed cause conflict?
Model answer
Greed for land, resources or power leads groups to take what belongs to others. Resentment and fighting follow.
- 4
How does hatred cause conflict?
Model answer
Hatred makes people see others as enemies to be defeated. Revenge then keeps the conflict going for generations.
- 5
How does delusion cause conflict?
Model answer
Delusion leads people to cling to fixed views and to see their own group as the only one that matters. The illusion of a separate self divides "us" from "them".
- 6
What problems does conflict cause within society?
Model answer
Conflict causes death, injury, homelessness and poverty. Conflict also leaves trauma and hatred that can last for generations.
