Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is abortion?
Model answer
Abortion is the deliberate ending of a pregnancy so that it does not result in birth. Under the Abortion Act 1967, as amended in 1990, abortion is legal in Great Britain up to 24 weeks in most cases.
- 2
What is the pro-life position?
Model answer
The pro-life position holds that abortion is wrong because the foetus is a human life. The unborn child has a right to life.
- 3
What is the pro-choice position?
Model answer
The pro-choice position holds that a woman has the right to decide what happens to her own body. Abortion should be her choice.
- 4
What does the Catholic Church teach about abortion?
Model answer
The Catholic Church teaches that life begins at conception and abortion is always gravely wrong. Pope Paul VI restated this in Humanae Vitae.
- 5
What is the principle of double effect?
Model answer
Double effect allows an action with a good aim even if it has a foreseen bad side effect. A Catholic may accept treatment for a pregnant woman's cancer that ends the pregnancy.
- 6
What does the Church of England teach about abortion?
Model answer
The Church of England opposes abortion in general but accepts it in some cases. Examples include a serious risk to the mother's life.
