- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Genesis 1:27, Genesis 2 on roles and the Fall in Genesis 3, Ephesians 5:21 to 30 read by traditional and liberal Christians, complementarian and egalitarian views, and how attitudes to family roles have changed.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How do some Christians interpret Genesis 2 on the roles of men and women?
What does Genesis 3 describe as a result of the Fall?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does Genesis 1:27 teach about men and women?
Model answer
God created humankind in God's own image, male and female. Christians take this to mean that men and women have equal worth.
- 2
How do some Christians interpret Genesis 2 on the roles of men and women?
Model answer
Some Christians read Eve's creation as a helper for Adam as giving the man a leading role. Others stress that the Hebrew word for helper is also used of God.
- 3
What does Genesis 3 describe as a result of the Fall?
Model answer
God tells the woman that her husband will rule over her. Many Christians see male domination as a result of sin, not God's original plan.
- 4
What does Ephesians 5:21–30 teach about husbands and wives?
Model answer
The passage opens by telling Christians to submit to one another. Wives are told to submit to their husbands, and husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the Church.
- 5
How do traditional Christians interpret Ephesians 5?
Model answer
Traditional Christians see different but equal roles in marriage. The husband leads the family and the wife cares for the home.
- 6
How do liberal Christians interpret Ephesians 5?
Model answer
Liberal Christians stress mutual submission in verse 21. Husband and wife are equal partners who share roles and decisions.
