Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What does it mean that humans are khalifah?

    Model answer

Khalifah means steward or trustee. Allah made humans khalifah on earth (Surah 2:30) to care for creation on his behalf.

  2. 2

    What is stewardship in Islam?

    Model answer

Stewardship is the duty to look after the world responsibly for Allah. Humans will be judged on how they treated creation.

  3. 3

What is mizan, and why does it matter for the environment?

    Model answer

Mizan is the balance Allah has set in creation (Surah 55:7–9). Muslims must not upset this balance through pollution or waste.

  4. 4

How do Muslims respond to pollution?

    Model answer

Muslims see pollution as corruption on earth (fasad), which the Qur'an condemns. Muhammad taught that removing harmful things from a path is charity.

  5. 5

How do Muslims respond to global warming?

    Model answer

Many Muslims see global warming as a result of greed and waste, breaking the trust of khalifah. The Islamic Declaration on Global Climate Change (2015) called on Muslims to act.

  6. 6

What does Islam teach about the use of natural resources?

    Model answer

Surah 7:31 tells people to eat and drink but not waste. Muhammad told a man not to waste water even when washing at a flowing river.
