Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What happens at the baptism of Jesus in Matthew 3:13–17?
Model answer
John baptises Jesus in the River Jordan. The Spirit of God descends like a dove and a voice speaks from heaven.
- 2
What does the voice from heaven say at the baptism of Jesus?
Model answer
The voice says, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased”. Catholics understand the voice to be God the Father.
- 3
Why is the baptism of Jesus important evidence for the Trinity?
Model answer
All three Persons are present together in Matthew 3:13–17. The Son is baptised, the Spirit descends and the Father speaks.
- 4
Why is the word “Trinity” not found in the Bible?
Model answer
The doctrine was worked out later by the Church to explain what the Bible reveals. Scripture shows the Father, the Son and the Spirit all acting as God.
- 5
Apart from the baptism of Jesus, which passage do Catholics use to show that the Trinity is biblical?
Model answer
Catholics point to the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19. Jesus commands his followers to baptise in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
- 6
What was the First Council of Nicaea?
Model answer
The First Council of Nicaea was a meeting of bishops called by the Emperor Constantine in 325 CE. The Council produced the first form of the Nicene Creed.
