Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What was Bon?

    Model answer

It is the name given to the religious tradition of Tibet before and alongside the arrival of Buddhism, associated with ritual specialists, local deities and rites for protection and the dead.

  2. 2

How did Buddhism relate to the earlier Tibetan religion as it established itself?

    Model answer

Rather than erasing it, Buddhism absorbed much of its ritual and its local deities, which were reinterpreted as protectors of the Buddhist teaching.

  3. 3

Why do scholars advise caution about describing Bon simply as a primitive predecessor?

    Model answer

The organised Bon tradition that survives today developed alongside Buddhism and shares much of its doctrine, so it is not a straightforward survival of what came before.

  4. 4

    What is Vajrayana?

    Model answer

It is the tantric form of Mahayana Buddhism, dominant in Tibet, which uses ritual, visualisation and the guidance of a teacher as a swift path to Buddhahood.

  5. 5

Why is a qualified teacher considered indispensable in Vajrayana?

    Model answer

Its practices are transmitted by empowerment and instruction rather than from books, and they are held to be ineffective or harmful without proper guidance.

  6. 6

    What is a mudra?

    Model answer

A mudra is a ritual gesture, usually of the hands, which expresses or enacts a particular quality or moment of the teaching.
