Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What does the word shari'a literally mean?

    Model answer

Shari'a means the path leading to the watering place, an image of the way that leads to life, and it is used for the divinely given way a Muslim should follow.

  2. 2

Name the four roots of law recognised in Sunni jurisprudence, in order of authority.

    Model answer

The Qur'an, then the sunnah of the Prophet, then ijma or consensus, then qiyas or reasoning by analogy.

  3. 3

    What is meant by sunna?

    Model answer

Sunna means the clear trodden path, and refers to the established practice of the Prophet: what he said, what he did and what he permitted by remaining silent.

  4. 4

How does a hadith differ from the sunna it reports?

    Model answer

The sunna is the Prophet's actual practice, while a hadith is a report about it transmitted by named narrators, so the sunna is the authority and the hadith is the evidence for it.

  5. 5

What are the two parts of a hadith?

    Model answer

Every hadith has an isnad, the chain of narrators through whom it was passed down, and a matn, the text of what is reported.

  6. 6

Give the main categories used to grade the reliability of a hadith.

    Model answer

Scholars class a report as sahih when it is sound, hasan when it is good but slightly weaker, da'if when it is weak, and mawdu when it is judged to be fabricated.
