Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Argue that the Bible can be regarded as the inspired word of God.

    Model answer

It claims as much of itself in 2 Timothy 3:16, the church has received it as such from the beginning, and its power to convert and sustain believers across many cultures is offered as evidence of more than human authorship.

  2. 2

Argue that the Bible cannot be regarded as the inspired word of God.

    Model answer

It contains internal disagreements and a pre-scientific picture of the world, its contents were settled by human councils, and an argument from its effects would equally support the scriptures of other religions.

  3. 3

How does the choice between objective and subjective inspiration change what the claim amounts to?

    Model answer

On the first the text is God's word whether or not anyone reads it, so any error is a serious problem; on the second inspiration is an event between text and reader, which eases that difficulty but weakens any fixed authority.

  4. 4

Argue that the order of the biblical books is itself inspired.

    Model answer

The arrangement teaches, since the Christian Old Testament ends with prophets pointing forward, the fourfold gospel opens the New Testament and Revelation closes the whole with a new creation, so the shape carries meaning the separate books do not.

  5. 5

Argue that only the texts and not their arrangement are inspired.

    Model answer

The orders differ between traditions, the Hebrew Bible ends with Chronicles rather than Malachi, the sequence owes much to scribal and printing convention, and no biblical writer claims inspiration for an arrangement.

  6. 6

Argue that the kerygmata are of real value for Christians today.

    Model answer

They preserve the earliest summary of what Christians believed, they keep preaching fixed on the death and resurrection rather than on the preacher's opinions, and they model a message shaped for actual hearers.
