Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Outline the main phases of Muslim migration to Britain.

    Model answer

Yemeni and Somali seafarers settled in port cities including Cardiff, Liverpool and South Shields from the nineteenth century; labour migration from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh followed the Second World War; East African Asians arrived after expulsion from Uganda in 1972; and later arrivals have come from Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria.

  2. 2

How large is the Muslim population of England and Wales?

    Model answer

The 2021 census recorded around 3.9 million Muslims in England and Wales, roughly 6.5% of the population, with the largest Welsh community in Cardiff.

  3. 3

    Distinguish assimilation, integration and segregation.

    Model answer

Assimilation means a minority giving up its distinctiveness and being absorbed into the majority; integration means full participation in society while retaining a distinct identity; and segregation means living substantially apart, whether by choice or by exclusion.

  4. 4

Why do Muslim communities in Britain often live in concentrated areas?

    Model answer

Migrants settled near the work and cheap housing available to them and were joined by relatives, proximity brings mosques, halal shops and family support, and racist hostility made numbers feel safer, so concentration reflects economics and discrimination as much as preference.

  5. 5

What did the Cantle report argue after the disturbances of 2001?

    Model answer

It described communities in some northern towns as living parallel lives that barely touched, and called for a shared sense of citizenship; critics argued it placed responsibility on minority communities and said too little about deindustrialisation and discrimination.

  6. 6

What issues does food raise for Muslims in Britain?

    Model answer

Meat must be slaughtered according to Islamic rules, which brings disagreement with campaigners over stunning, and Muslims need reliable halal provision in schools, hospitals and workplaces as well as ways of taking part in social occasions built around alcohol.
