Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What was the dispute over the succession to Muhammad?

    Model answer

When the Prophet died in 632 most of the community accepted Abu Bakr, chosen by the leading companions, while a minority held that Muhammad had already designated his cousin and son-in-law Ali, and that leadership belonged in his family.

  2. 2

What happened at Ghadir Khumm, and how is it read?

    Model answer

Returning from his final pilgrimage Muhammad took Ali by the hand and said that whoever accepted him as their master should accept Ali likewise; Shi'a Muslims read this as a formal designation of a successor, while Sunnis accept the event and read it as an expression of affection and support.

  3. 3

    What happened to Ali himself?

    Model answer

Ali became the fourth caliph in 656 after the killing of Uthman, faced civil war and the challenge of Mu'awiya, and was assassinated in the mosque at Kufa in 661.

  4. 4

Why is the death of Hussein treated as the defining event of Shi'a Islam?

    Model answer

Hussein refused allegiance to the caliph Yazid and was killed with his companions at Karbala in 680, which turned a dispute about succession into a permanent conviction that rightful authority had been usurped and that suffering witness against injustice is a religious duty.

  5. 5

What does the word Imam mean in Shi'a doctrine?

    Model answer

The Imam is a divinely appointed leader from the Prophet's family who is protected from sin and error, possesses inherited knowledge of the inner meaning of revelation, and holds religious authority over the community; this is far more than the Sunni use of imam for whoever leads a prayer.

  6. 6

Distinguish the three main branches of Shi'a Islam.

    Model answer

Twelvers, by far the largest group, recognise twelve Imams ending with the hidden Mahdi; Ismailis followed a different line after the sixth Imam and the Nizari branch follows a living Imam, the Aga Khan; and Zaydis, found mainly in Yemen, accept any qualified descendant who rises against injustice.
