Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe the government of England between 1204 and 1212.

    Model answer

John governed in person, travelling constantly, driving the exchequer and the courts hard, and relying on trusted household men and foreign captains as sheriffs and castellans.

  2. 2

    How did John use patronage?

    Model answer

He rewarded a narrow circle of dependants, often foreigners, and used the granting and withholding of favour arbitrarily to keep the baronage insecure.

  3. 3

What did John achieve on the Poitou campaign of 1206?

    Model answer

He recovered ground in Poitou and Gascony and secured a truce, showing that the Continental losses were not necessarily irreversible.

  4. 4

Describe John's strategy in 1214 and why it failed.

    Model answer

He advanced from the south-west while his allies attacked northern France, but his Poitevin nobles refused to fight and his coalition was destroyed by Philip at Bouvines, ending any hope of reconquest.

  5. 5

    Who were the 'Northerners'?

    Model answer

They were a group of northern barons largely outside John's circle of patronage, with grievances over debts, forest law and taxation, who took the lead in opposition from 1212 and refused the scutage demanded for Poitou.

  6. 6

Describe the course of the rebellion of 1215.

    Model answer

The barons demanded confirmation of the liberties granted by Henry I, renounced their homage in May, seized London, and forced John to negotiate at Runnymede in June.
