Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Describe Cathar organisation.

    Model answer

A small elite of perfecti and perfectae, who had received the consolamentum and lived under strict ascetic rule, ministered to a much larger body of believers, and were organised under bishops assisted by a senior and a junior deputy and by deacons.

  2. 2

Who were the Waldensians and how did they begin?

    Model answer

They were the followers of Valdes of Lyon, a merchant who around 1173 gave away his property, commissioned vernacular translations of scripture and began preaching apostolic poverty in the streets.

  3. 3

Why did the Waldensians become heretics when their beliefs were largely orthodox?

    Model answer

They were refused permission to preach and went on preaching anyway, so they were condemned in 1184 for disobedience and unlicensed preaching rather than for false doctrine, and only afterwards developed anticlerical positions.

  4. 4

Who were the Bogomils, and why do they matter to the study of western heresy?

    Model answer

They were a dualist movement that arose in Bulgaria and spread through the Balkans and Byzantium, and they matter because contemporaries and many modern historians have seen them as the source of the dualist ideas that reached Italy and Languedoc.

  5. 5

Who were the Henricians and the Petrobrusians?

    Model answer

They were the followers of two wandering preachers of the early twelfth century, Henry of Lausanne and Peter of Bruys, who attacked churches, the sacraments, infant baptism, prayers for the dead and the authority of the clergy in southern France.

  6. 6

How did the term Patarene change its meaning?

    Model answer

It began as a name for the popular reforming movement in eleventh-century Milan, which had papal backing against married and simoniac clergy, and it was later used in Italy as an ordinary word for heretics.
