Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why are the settlements in the Occupied Territories so contentious?

    Model answer

They place Israeli civilians on land captured in 1967, are widely held to breach international law, and break up the territory on which any Palestinian state would have to be built.

  2. 2

What was the stated purpose of the separation barrier begun in 2002, and the main objection to it?

    Model answer

Israel said it was needed to stop suicide attacks during the second intifada, while critics objected that its route ran well inside the West Bank, taking in land and cutting Palestinians off from their fields, workplaces and hospitals.

  3. 3

What did the Camp David Accords of 1978 achieve?

    Model answer

They produced the framework for the Egyptian-Israeli treaty of 1979, under which Sadat recognised Israel and Israel returned Sinai, making Egypt the first Arab state to make peace and leaving it isolated in the Arab world.

  4. 4

What was agreed at Oslo in 1993, and what was left unresolved?

    Model answer

Israel and the PLO recognised one another and agreed phased Palestinian self-rule; Jerusalem, refugees, borders and settlements were deferred to final-status talks that never reached agreement.

  5. 5

Outline what the Road Map for peace proposed.

    Model answer

It was a plan issued in 2003 by the United States, the European Union, the United Nations and Russia, setting out staged steps of an end to violence, Palestinian reform and a settlement freeze, leading to a Palestinian state.

  6. 6

How did the refugee exodus affect Jordan, Lebanon and Gaza?

    Model answer

Jordan absorbed its refugees and granted them citizenship, Lebanon confined them to camps without citizenship where they unsettled its sectarian balance, and Gaza's small population was overwhelmed by newcomers dependent on United Nations relief.
