Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How diverse was Native American society in the early nineteenth century?

    Model answer

Hundreds of distinct peoples spoke unrelated languages and lived in wholly different ways, from the farming towns of the south-east and the pueblos of the south-west to the fishing villages of the north-west coast.

  2. 2

How did the Plains peoples live?

    Model answer

They followed the buffalo herds on horseback in bands, living in portable tipis and using every part of the animal for food, clothing, shelter and tools, with authority resting on councils and war honours rather than fixed rulers.

  3. 3

Why were the Cherokee and their neighbours called the Five Civilized Tribes?

    Model answer

They were so called because the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek and Seminole had adopted settled farming, written laws and, in the Cherokee case, a written syllabary, a constitution and a newspaper.

  4. 4

State what Tecumseh set out to achieve.

    Model answer

With his brother the Prophet he tried to unite the peoples of the Ohio and Mississippi valleys in a confederacy that would hold land in common and refuse all further cessions to the United States.

  5. 5

    How did Tecumseh's confederacy end?

    Model answer

Harrison destroyed the base at Prophetstown after the battle of Tippecanoe in 1811, and Tecumseh, fighting alongside the British, was killed at the Thames in 1813, after which the alliance collapsed.

  6. 6

What was the First Seminole War?

    Model answer

Between 1817 and 1818 Jackson invaded Spanish Florida in pursuit of Seminoles and of enslaved people who had escaped to them, an intervention that helped force Spain to surrender the territory.
