Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    How did Finland's position change?

    Model answer

The Grand Duchy kept its own diet, laws, currency and army under the tsar until the February Manifesto of 1899 and the law of 1910 subordinated it to Russian legislation, provoking mass passive resistance and the assassination of the governor-general Bobrikov.

  2. 2

What happened in the Baltic provinces?

    Model answer

They had been governed through a German-speaking noble elite until Russification imposed Russian officials, courts and schooling, which also stimulated Estonian and Latvian national movements, and Latvian workers and peasants were among the most violent participants in 1905.

  3. 3

How did the First World War affect the borderland nationalities?

    Model answer

The fighting and German occupation devastated Poland, Lithuania and the Baltic provinces, millions became refugees and Jews were deported wholesale as suspected traitors, all of which strengthened demands for independence.

  4. 4

What did the Bolsheviks promise the nationalities in 1917?

    Model answer

The Declaration of the Rights of the Peoples of Russia offered equality and self-determination up to secession, which won support in the borderlands even though the Bolsheviks intended to recover them for Soviet rule.

  5. 5

What did Russia lose at Brest-Litovsk?

    Model answer

In March 1918 it surrendered Poland, the Baltic provinces, Finland, Ukraine and territory in the Caucasus — roughly a third of its population together with much of its industry, coal and best grain land.

  6. 6

How did the Russo-Polish War end?

    Model answer

The Red Army drove the Poles out of Ukraine but was beaten outside Warsaw in 1920, and the Treaty of Riga in 1921 gave Poland western Ukraine and western Belorussia.
