Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

On what grounds did Louis XIV attack the Spanish Netherlands in 1667?

    Model answer

He claimed that by a local inheritance custom, the right of devolution, his wife's rights to the provinces took precedence over those of her half-brother Charles II of Spain, and the unpaid dowry cancelled her renunciation.

  2. 2

How did the Dutch War of 1672–78 end?

    Model answer

The United Provinces survived by opening the dykes and building a coalition against France, but at the treaties of Nijmegen France kept Franche-Comté and further towns in Flanders, leaving Louis XIV at the height of his power.

  3. 3

Explain what was meant by the reunions.

    Model answer

In the early 1680s special French courts awarded Louis XIV territories that they judged to be legal dependencies of lands already ceded to him, allowing him to annex places such as Strasbourg in 1681 in time of peace.

  4. 4

What was the significance of the Nine Years War of 1688–97?

    Model answer

For the first time a grand alliance including the Emperor, Spain, the Dutch and England fought France to a standstill, and at Ryswick Louis XIV gave up most of the reunions and recognised William III as King of England.

  5. 5

Why did the War of the Spanish Succession break out in 1701?

    Model answer

Charles II of Spain left his whole inheritance to Louis XIV's grandson Philip of Anjou; Louis accepted rather than keep to the partition treaties, and his refusal to bar Philip from the French succession and his actions in the barrier fortresses convinced the maritime powers that the crowns would be united.

  6. 6

Name three defeats that broke French dominance in the War of the Spanish Succession.

    Model answer

Blenheim in 1704, Ramillies in 1706 and Malplaquet in 1709.
