Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How did the first phase of the Fronde end?

    Model answer

After the court fled Paris in January 1649 and Condé blockaded the city, the Peace of Rueil in March 1649 ended the Fronde of the parlement, with the crown conceding much of the judges' programme in return for their submission.

  2. 2

What started the Fronde of the princes?

    Model answer

Condé's arrogance after saving the regency made him intolerable, and in January 1650 Mazarin had him arrested with his brother Conti and the Duc de Longueville, which turned their families and clients into rebels and forced their release in February 1651.

  3. 3

What role did Condé play in the later Fronde?

    Model answer

The victor of Rocroi and Lens became the leader of the aristocratic revolt, seized control of Guyenne, fought the royal army in Paris in 1652 and, when defeated, took service with Spain and fought against France for the rest of the war.

  4. 4

What role did the Cardinal de Retz play?

    Model answer

Jean François Paul de Gondi, coadjutor of Paris, used his influence with the clergy and the Paris crowd to inflame resistance, shifted between factions in pursuit of his own advancement and the cardinal's hat, and was finally arrested at the end of 1652.

  5. 5

How did religion enter the Fronde?

    Model answer

The Paris clergy and the devout, many of them sympathetic to Jansenism and hostile to a worldly cardinal-minister, gave the revolt preachers, respectability and organisation, which is why Louis XIV afterwards linked Jansenism with sedition.

  6. 6

Describe Mazarin's response to the crisis.

    Model answer

He avoided pitched confrontation, bought off opponents one by one and exploited their divisions, and twice withdrew into exile in the Rhineland, from where he continued to advise the queen by letter until the storm against him blew itself out.
