  1. 1

How did Bohemia respond to the execution of Hus?

    Model answer

Hundreds of Czech and Moravian nobles sealed a letter of protest to the council and formed a league to protect free preaching, parishes were taken over by Hussite priests, and a separate Bohemian Church took shape in the years to 1419.

  2. 2

Describe the First Defenestration of Prague.

    Model answer

In July 1419 a radical crowd led by the preacher Jan Želivský stormed the New Town hall and threw the councillors from the windows to their deaths, an act that began the open revolution; Wenceslas IV died within weeks.

  3. 3

Set out the Four Articles of Prague and explain their importance.

    Model answer

They demanded free preaching of the word of God, communion in both kinds for the laity, the removal of the clergy's worldly wealth and secular rule, and the punishment of public mortal sins by the proper authorities; they were the minimum programme on which nobles, Prague burghers and radicals could all agree, so they held the coalition together in war and framed every negotiation with the Church.

  4. 4

What were the papal and imperial attitudes to the Hussites?

    Model answer

Martin V proclaimed a crusade against them in 1420 and refused any concession to heresy, while Sigismund, as heir to the Bohemian throne, tried to combine crusading force with attempts to be accepted as king, and was refused by the Hussites for sixteen years.

  5. 5

What was Tabor, and how did the Taborites differ from the moderate Hussites?

    Model answer

Tabor was a fortified settlement founded in southern Bohemia in 1420 by the radical wing, a community with its own elected bishop and army; where the Prague masters and the nobility wanted the Four Articles within a recognisably Catholic Church, the Taborites briefly expected the end of the world and swept away purgatory, images, vestments and hierarchy, and were socially far more radical.

  6. 6

Who was Jan Žižka, and what made the Hussite armies so effective?

    Model answer

He was the commander who created and led the Hussite field army from 1420, an experienced soldier blind from 1421 and never defeated before his death in 1424; his innovation was the war-wagon: laagers of chained wagons carrying handgunners and light cannon that broke charges of armoured cavalry and could be reformed into a mobile fortress, combined with disciplined, drilled peasant infantry and a powerful sense of religious cause.
