  1. 1

What were the main economic differences between North and South by 1850?

    Model answer

The North had factories, banks, dense railway networks and free wage labour on family farms, while the South exported cotton grown by enslaved people and bought most of its manufactures from the North or Britain.

  2. 2

How did the two sections differ socially and politically by 1850?

    Model answer

Immigration and industry gave the free states a fast-growing population and a permanent majority in the House, while southern politics was dominated by a small planter class that saw itself as a threatened minority.

  3. 3

State what the Missouri Compromise settled in 1820.

    Model answer

It admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free one to preserve the balance in the Senate, and banned slavery in the rest of the Louisiana Purchase north of the line of thirty-six degrees thirty minutes.

  4. 4

Why did the Mexican Cession revive the quarrel over slavery?

    Model answer

Vast new territory had to be organised, and the Wilmot Proviso's attempt to bar slavery from all of it, though never passed, showed that northern opinion would resist further expansion of the institution.

  5. 5

Outline the terms of the Compromise of 1850.

    Model answer

California entered as a free state, Utah and New Mexico were organised without a decision on slavery, the Texas boundary was settled with payment of its debts, the slave trade was abolished in the District of Columbia, and a stronger fugitive slave law was enacted.

  6. 6

Why did the Fugitive Slave Act cause such anger in the North?

    Model answer

It obliged citizens to help capture runaways, denied the accused a jury or the right to testify, and paid commissioners more for returning a person than for freeing them, which made ordinary northerners feel implicated in slavery.
