Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define the term Pax Mongolica.

    Model answer

It is the period from the mid-13th to the mid-14th century in which Mongol authority across Eurasia made the overland routes between Europe, the Islamic world and China unusually safe for merchants, envoys and missionaries.

  2. 2

What was the yam, and why did it matter beyond military use?

    Model answer

It was the relay system of posting stations with fresh horses and lodging along the empire's roads, and because travellers carrying an official tablet could use it, it turned a military communications network into the backbone of long-distance travel and trade.

  3. 3

How did Mongol rule affect the volume and direction of trade?

    Model answer

Bringing the whole length of the Silk Road under a single family of rulers removed the frontiers, tolls and raiding that had broken the route into segments, and Genoese and Venetian colonies on the Black Sea plugged Europe directly into that road system, so silk, spices, porcelain and slaves moved further and more cheaply than before.

  4. 4

Name three technologies that spread westwards in the Mongol period.

    Model answer

Gunpowder, printing and the manufacture of paper money all reached the West by way of the Mongol lands.

  5. 5

What happened when the Ilkhanate tried to introduce Chinese-style paper money?

    Model answer

Notes were issued in Persia in 1294 on the Chinese model, but merchants refused to accept paper with no established value behind it, trade in the markets stopped and the scheme was abandoned within weeks.

  6. 6

Give an example of artistic exchange between China and Persia under the Mongols.

    Model answer

Persian painters absorbed Chinese landscape, cloud and dragon motifs into manuscript illustration, while Chinese potters worked with cobalt imported from Persia to produce blue-and-white porcelain.
