Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How did Louis Philippe present himself as king?

    Model answer

He cultivated a plain bourgeois image, walking Paris with an umbrella and calling himself the citizen king, though in private he intervened constantly in government and was determined to rule as well as reign.

  2. 2

How was the Charter revised in 1830, and how far did the franchise widen?

    Model answer

It became a contract rather than a royal gift, the king was styled king of the French, censorship was forbidden, Catholicism became merely the religion of the majority, the tricolour returned, and the tax qualification fell to two hundred francs, roughly doubling the electorate to about a hundred and seventy thousand.

  3. 3

Explain what was meant by the juste milieu.

    Model answer

It was Louis Philippe's claim to steer a middle course between reaction and revolution, defended by the Party of Resistance under Casimir Périer against the Party of Movement, which wanted further reform at home and intervention abroad.

  4. 4

What internal challenges did the July Monarchy face in its first years?

    Model answer

Legitimist conspiracy in the Vendée, republican insurrections in Paris and the silk workers' risings in Lyon in 1831 and 1834 all had to be put down by force.

  5. 5

Why were the September Laws passed in 1835?

    Model answer

After Fieschi's infernal machine killed eighteen people in an attempt on the king, the government restricted juries, banned republican propaganda and made attacks on the monarchy a criminal offence.

  6. 6

How did the July Monarchy handle the Belgian crisis?

    Model answer

France supported Belgian independence and sent troops to expel the Dutch from Antwerp, but Louis Philippe refused the Belgian crown for his son to avoid war with Britain, and accepted Leopold of Saxe-Coburg instead.
