  1. 1

What caused the Cornish rising of 1497 and who led it?

    Model answer

A subsidy to fund war against Scotland provoked a march on London led by Michael Joseph, a blacksmith known as An Gof, and the lawyer Thomas Flamank, later joined by Lord Audley.

  2. 2

Why did the Amicable Grant provoke resistance in 1525?

    Model answer

Wolsey demanded a heavy non-parliamentary levy to pay for invading France at a time of trade depression in the cloth districts, and thousands refused to pay in Suffolk and Essex, forcing the government to abandon the demand.

  3. 3

How did famine and harvest failure contribute to disorder?

    Model answer

Successive bad harvests pushed up grain prices beyond what wage-earners could pay, so hunger sharpened existing grievances, as in 1549 and in the mid-1590s, when dearth lay behind the attempted rising in Oxfordshire in 1596.

  4. 4

Why did prices rise so sharply during the sixteenth century?

    Model answer

A growing population pressed on a fixed food supply, the debasement of the coinage in the 1540s cut the value of money, and increased bullion supplies added to the pressure, so real wages fell sharply.

  5. 5

Explain what enclosure was and why it was resented.

    Model answer

Enclosure was the hedging or fencing of open fields and commons, often to convert arable land to sheep pasture, and it was hated because it removed common grazing rights, reduced the need for labour and could depopulate villages.

  6. 6

Outline the main grievances behind Kett's rebellion in 1549.

    Model answer

The rebels complained above all about the gentry's abuse of manorial and common rights, including the enclosure of commons, overstocking with sheep, rack-renting and the seizure of what the commons regarded as their own resources.
