  1. 1

    Trace Thomas Cromwell's rise.

    Model answer

He entered the king's service after Wolsey's fall, became Principal Secretary and Master of the Rolls in 1534, vicegerent in spirituals over the whole Church in 1535, Lord Privy Seal in 1536 and finally Earl of Essex in 1540.

  2. 2

What changes in government are associated with Cromwell?

    Model answer

The use of statute to settle the greatest matters of Church and state, new financial departments such as Augmentations and First Fruits and Tenths, a smaller and more formal Privy Council, and the incorporation of Wales into the English system of shires and law.

  3. 3

Why did Cromwell fall in 1540?

    Model answer

The Cleves marriage he arranged was a personal disaster for Henry, conservative rivals led by Norfolk and Gardiner exploited the king's anger and dangled Catherine Howard before him, and Cromwell was attainted without trial and executed.

  4. 4

How far did Henry VIII rule personally in the 1540s?

    Model answer

He kept the final word and used the Privy Chamber and the dry stamp of his signature, but he was ill, obese and increasingly erratic, and with no chief minister much of the governing was done by the Privy Council and the factions within it.

  5. 5

Describe the factional struggle at the end of the reign.

    Model answer

Conservatives around Norfolk and Gardiner fought reformers around the Seymours, Dudley and Cranmer; the conservatives were damaged by Catherine Howard's fall and failed in their attacks on Cranmer and Catherine Parr, and the reformers won when Surrey was executed and Norfolk attainted days before Henry died.

  6. 6

What happened in the wars with Scotland in the 1540s?

    Model answer

An English victory at Solway Moss in 1542 was followed by the death of James V, and when the Scots repudiated the treaty for the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots, Hertford's armies burned Edinburgh and the Borders in a campaign that drove Scotland back towards France.
