Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How did Piedmont gain the central duchies?

    Model answer

National Society committees kept the restored rulers out, Cavour returned to office and secured Napoleon III's acquiescence, and plebiscites in Tuscany, Modena, Parma and the Romagna in 1860 voted for union with Piedmont.

  2. 2

What price did Piedmont pay for French agreement to the annexations?

    Model answer

By the Treaty of Turin in 1860 it ceded Nice and Savoy to France, subject to plebiscites, which infuriated Garibaldi, whose birthplace was Nice.

  3. 3

How did the expedition of the Thousand begin?

    Model answer

Encouraged by a peasant revolt in Sicily, Garibaldi sailed from Quarto near Genoa in May 1860 with about a thousand red-shirted volunteers and landed at Marsala under the eyes of the Bourbon navy.

  4. 4

    How did Garibaldi conquer Sicily?

    Model answer

He won at Calatafimi, declared himself dictator in the name of Victor Emmanuel II, exploited peasant risings against landlords, captured Palermo and won at Milazzo in July 1860, leaving the Bourbons only the citadel of Messina.

  5. 5

How did Cavour respond to Garibaldi's success?

    Model answer

He publicly disowned the expedition while privately allowing it to sail, tried to have Sicily annexed at once to take it out of Garibaldi's hands, and feared that a march on Rome would bring French intervention.

  6. 6

What happened when Garibaldi crossed to the mainland?

    Model answer

He crossed the Straits of Messina in August 1860, advanced with little fighting as the Bourbon army disintegrated, entered Naples in September, and then held off the remaining royal forces at the Volturno.
