Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

State when the Catholic Association was founded and by whom.

    Model answer

It was founded in 1823 by Daniel O'Connell together with Richard Lalor Sheil to campaign for Catholic Emancipation.

  2. 2

Explain what the Catholic rent was and why it was so effective.

    Model answer

It was a subscription of a penny a month collected by priests at parish level, which funded the movement, recruited hundreds of thousands of ordinary Catholics and gave the campaign an organisation reaching into every locality.

  3. 3

    What were O'Connell's characteristic methods?

    Model answer

He combined mass organisation, legal and parliamentary pressure, propaganda and electoral intervention, insisting on constitutional means while allowing the sheer scale of his following to imply the danger of disorder.

  4. 4

How did the government try to destroy the Association in 1825?

    Model answer

Parliament passed an act suppressing unlawful societies, and O'Connell responded by dissolving the Association and immediately reconstituting it in a form that fell outside the wording of the law.

  5. 5

What was the significance of the Waterford election of 1826?

    Model answer

Forty-shilling freeholders voted against their landlords to defeat the Beresford interest, showing that the Association could turn tenant voters against the men who held their leases.

  6. 6

Why was the Clare by-election of 1828 decisive?

    Model answer

O'Connell stood and won convincingly against a popular pro-emancipation minister, yet as a Catholic could not take his seat, presenting the government with either concession or a confrontation it might not survive.
