Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Outline the central aims of the papal reform movement.

    Model answer

To free the Church from lay control, to end simony and clerical marriage, and to assert the pope's authority as supreme head of the whole Church.

  2. 2

Why did lay investiture become the flashpoint of reform?

    Model answer

Because a ruler who handed a bishop his ring and staff appeared to be conferring a spiritual office, which reformers held only the Church could give.

  3. 3

What did Lanfranc do to reorganise the English Church?

    Model answer

He held reforming councils, replaced most English bishops and abbots with Normans, moved several sees from villages to towns, separated Church courts from the hundred courts and secured Canterbury's primacy.

  4. 4

How did Lanfranc handle the demands of the reform papacy?

    Model answer

He co-operated with William I rather than Rome, supporting the king's refusal to do fealty to Gregory VII while pursuing the moral reforms he could achieve through English councils.

  5. 5

Why did Canterbury stand vacant for four years under William II?

    Model answer

The king drew the revenues of the vacant see into his own treasury and had no wish to appoint a successor to Lanfranc until illness frightened him into it.

  6. 6

Why was Anselm a difficult archbishop for both William II and Henry I?

    Model answer

He was a monk and theologian who put obedience to Rome and the freedom of the Church before royal convenience, and he was willing to leave the kingdom rather than concede.
