Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How did kingship work in Scandinavian England?

    Model answer

Power was held by warlords and their fleets rather than by an established dynasty, so kings of York came and went by conquest, often ruling in alliance with Dublin, while elsewhere armies were led by earls based on the boroughs.

  2. 2

How did settlement change the livelihood of northern and eastern England?

    Model answer

Estates were broken up among numerous smaller landholders, craft production and market exchange expanded in the boroughs, and long-distance trade with Scandinavia, Ireland and the Rhineland grew rapidly.

  3. 3

Define a sokeman and explain why the term matters.

    Model answer

A sokeman was a peasant of unusually free status owing limited service, and the very high numbers recorded in Lincolnshire and East Anglia have long been used as evidence for the social effects of Scandinavian settlement.

  4. 4

How did settlement affect family and social custom in the Danelaw?

    Model answer

Scandinavian personal names, naming by patronymic and Norse legal vocabulary took root, marriage between settlers and English families was common, and within two or three generations a hybrid Anglo-Scandinavian culture had formed.

  5. 5

Explain how the Viking settlements helped create a united English kingdom.

    Model answer

By destroying the dynasties of Northumbria, Mercia and East Anglia they left Wessex as the only surviving English kingdom, so the reconquest of the Danelaw by Edward the Elder and Aethelflaed produced a single realm under one royal house.

  6. 6

How was the Danelaw brought back under English rule?

    Model answer

Edward the Elder and his sister Aethelflaed of Mercia advanced by building and garrisoning burhs, forcing submissions borough by borough until East Anglia and the Five Boroughs fell by 918, and Athelstan took York in 927.
