What did the Nazi-Soviet Pact of August 1939 contain?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why did the powers adopt non-intervention in the Spanish Civil War?
Model answer
Britain and France feared that outside involvement would turn a Spanish quarrel into a general European war, so they sponsored an agreement to keep arms out, which Germany, Italy and the Soviet Union signed and then ignored.
- 2
What help did Germany and Italy give Franco?
Model answer
Germany supplied aircraft, pilots and technical units including the force that bombed Guernica, while Italy sent tens of thousands of troops, aircraft and naval support.
- 3
State three effects of the Spanish Civil War on international relations.
Model answer
It drew Germany and Italy into close cooperation that became the Axis, it exposed the democracies' non-intervention as ineffective and one-sided, and it gave the Germans a testing ground for aircraft and tactics.
- 4
How did relations between the Soviet Union and the Western powers develop between 1934 and 1939?
Model answer
The Soviet Union joined the League in 1934 and signed a pact with France in 1935 in pursuit of collective security, but it was excluded from Munich, and in 1939 the Anglo-French mission arrived slowly with junior delegates and could not promise the Red Army passage through Poland, so Stalin concluded he was being left to face Germany alone.
- 5
What did the Nazi-Soviet Pact of August 1939 contain?
Model answer
A public ten-year non-aggression treaty and a secret protocol dividing Poland and assigning Estonia, Latvia, Finland and Bessarabia to the Soviet sphere and Lithuania to Germany's.
- 6
Why did each side sign the Nazi-Soviet Pact?
Model answer
Hitler removed the risk of a war on two fronts and cleared the way to attack Poland, while Stalin bought territory, raw materials and time to rearm after being left out of Munich.
