Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How did the treaty port system change China's relations with the outside world?

    Model answer

A widening network of ports was opened to foreign residence and trade under extraterritoriality, fixed low tariffs and most-favoured-nation clauses, so the Unequal Treaties formed a single system in which every concession granted to one power passed automatically to the rest.

  2. 2

Why did the Second Opium War break out in 1856?

    Model answer

Britain and France wanted wider access to the interior, resident legations in Beijing and formal legalisation of opium, and used the Arrow incident and the killing of a French missionary as pretexts.

  3. 3

What happened at Beijing in 1860?

    Model answer

Anglo-French forces occupied the capital and burned the Summer Palace in reprisal for the killing of captured envoys, forcing the court to ratify the Treaties of Tianjin.

  4. 4

What did the Convention of Peking add to China's obligations?

    Model answer

It opened Tianjin to trade, confirmed the Tianjin treaties under which opium had been legalised in 1858, permitted the coolie trade, allowed missionaries to travel and hold property inland, ceded Kowloon to Britain and raised the indemnity.

  5. 5

    Define extraterritoriality.

    Model answer

The right of foreign nationals in China to be tried under their own country's law by their own consuls rather than in Chinese courts.

  6. 6

What were the results of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894–95?

    Model answer

China's defeat produced the Treaty of Shimonoseki, which recognised Korean independence, ceded Taiwan and imposed a crushing indemnity, exposing Qing weakness to every other power.
