Why do interpretations of Black Power differ so widely?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why did Black Power emerge in the mid-1960s?

    Model answer

The Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts had removed southern legal segregation but did nothing about northern ghetto poverty, police brutality and de facto segregation; the Watts riot of 1965 and those that followed showed the depth of urban anger; the murders of Freedom Summer in 1964 and the rebuff of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party at Atlantic City discredited faith in white liberal allies; and decolonisation in Africa and opposition to the draft supplied a wider anti-colonial language.

  2. 2

Where and how was the slogan Black Power launched?

    Model answer

Stokely Carmichael used it at Greenwood, Mississippi, in June 1966 during the march continuing James Meredith's walk through the state after Meredith had been shot, and the crowd's response made it the rallying cry of the younger activists in place of the older demand for freedom now.

  3. 3

How did SNCC and CORE change after 1966?

    Model answer

Carmichael replaced John Lewis as chairman of SNCC and Floyd McKissick took over CORE, both organisations abandoned integration as a goal and voted to exclude or sideline their white members, dropped non-violence as a principle, and turned towards independent Black political organisation, at the cost of most of their white funding.

  4. 4

What did the Black Panther Party do beyond its rhetoric?

    Model answer

It armed patrols to observe police stops in Oakland, published a widely read newspaper, and ran survival programmes including free breakfasts for thousands of schoolchildren, clinics and sickle-cell screening; the state answered with armed raids, the killing of Fred Hampton in Chicago in 1969 and the FBI's COINTELPRO campaign of infiltration and forged letters that set the Panthers against rival groups.

  5. 5

Give the main forms taken by cultural Black Power.

    Model answer

It produced the assertion that Black is beautiful in dress, hair and speech, the Black Arts Movement in poetry and theatre, Maulana Karenga's US organisation and the invention of Kwanzaa, campaigns that established Black Studies programmes in universities from 1968, and symbolic gestures such as the raised fists on the Olympic podium in Mexico City.

  6. 6

How did Black Power affect Martin Luther King and non-violent direct action?

    Model answer

It exposed the limits of his methods in the North, where the Chicago campaign of 1966 achieved almost nothing against housing segregation, split the coalition by frightening white liberals and church funders, and forced King to move towards economic demands in the Poor People's Campaign; he criticised the slogan as a counsel of despair while conceding that the frustration behind it was justified.
