Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What happened to the Irish University Bill of 1873?

    Model answer

Gladstone's scheme for a single non-denominational university satisfied neither the Catholic hierarchy nor Protestant opinion, and Irish Catholic members joined the Conservatives to defeat it by three votes, after which he offered his resignation and Disraeli refused to take office.

  2. 2

What were the main provisions of Forster's Education Act of 1870?

    Model answer

Where voluntary schools left gaps, elected school boards were to build board schools funded from the rates, with attendance made compulsory locally, and under the Cowper-Temple clause religious teaching in board schools was to be non-denominational.

  3. 3

Why did Nonconformists resent the Education Act?

    Model answer

It gave rate aid and a breathing space to Anglican voluntary schools rather than replacing them, and in some districts allowed the rates to pay poor children's fees at church schools, which Nonconformists saw as taxing them to teach Anglicanism.

  4. 4

Name three of Cardwell's army reforms.

    Model answer

Troops were withdrawn from the self-governing colonies to concentrate defence at home, short service of six years with the colours replaced long enlistment, and regiments were linked to county depots so that one battalion served abroad while the other recruited at home.

  5. 5

How was the purchase of commissions abolished?

    Model answer

When the Lords blocked the bill in 1871, Gladstone had the practice cancelled by royal warrant, which ended the sale of officers' commissions but caused lasting resentment among aristocratic officers.

  6. 6

What did the Ballot Act of 1872 do, and where was its effect greatest?

    Model answer

It made voting secret in parliamentary and local elections; the effect was greatest in Ireland, where tenants could vote against their landlords and returned some sixty Home Rule members in 1874.
