Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What was agreed at the Tehran Conference of 1943?

    Model answer

The western allies committed themselves to opening a second front in 1944, Stalin promised to join the war against Japan once Germany was beaten, and Poland's frontiers were provisionally shifted westwards.

  2. 2

Summarise the main decisions of the Yalta Conference of February 1945.

    Model answer

Germany was to be divided into four occupation zones with Berlin similarly divided, a United Nations with a Security Council veto would be created, Nazi war criminals tried, and the liberated states promised free elections.

  3. 3

Why did the Yalta agreement on Poland cause later trouble?

    Model answer

It was left deliberately vague: the Soviet-backed provisional government was only to be reorganised on a broader basis and free elections were promised without any timetable or means of enforcement.

  4. 4

Define the Declaration on Liberated Europe.

    Model answer

It was the Yalta pledge that the peoples freed from Nazi rule would be able to create democratic institutions of their own choosing through free elections.

  5. 5

How had the leading personalities changed by the Potsdam Conference?

    Model answer

Roosevelt had died and been replaced by the more suspicious Truman, and Churchill was replaced mid-conference by Attlee after the British general election, leaving Stalin the only original member of the Big Three.

  6. 6

What were the main disagreements at Potsdam?

    Model answer

The powers quarrelled over reparations, settling on each taking them from its own zone, over Poland's new western border on the Oder and Neisse, and over Soviet behaviour in eastern Europe.
