Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What were William III's aims in foreign policy?

    Model answer

To check the expansion of Louis XIV's France, to protect the Dutch Republic and the European balance of power, and to secure recognition of the Revolution settlement and the Protestant succession in England.

  2. 2

Outline the Nine Years War of 1689 to 1697.

    Model answer

England joined a grand coalition against France, fought a costly and largely indecisive land war in Flanders around fortress sieges such as Namur, defended Ireland after the Boyne, and won command of the sea at Barfleur and La Hogue in 1692 after the setback at Beachy Head.

  3. 3

What did the Peace of Ryswick settle?

    Model answer

Louis XIV returned most of his conquests and recognised William as the lawful king of England, but nothing was settled about the Spanish succession, so the peace was really a truce.

  4. 4

What caused the War of the Spanish Succession?

    Model answer

Carlos II of Spain died in 1700 leaving the whole empire to Louis XIV's grandson Philip of Anjou; Louis accepted the will, occupied the Dutch barrier fortresses, threatened English trade and recognised the Old Pretender as king of England.

  5. 5

Describe the Grand Alliance of 1701.

    Model answer

The coalition of England, the Dutch Republic and the Austrian Habsburgs formed to prevent the union of the French and Spanish crowns, secure a barrier for the Dutch and protect the trade of the maritime powers.

  6. 6

    Why was Blenheim important?

    Model answer

Marlborough's march to the Danube and his victory with Eugene in 1704 saved Vienna, knocked Bavaria out of the war and shattered the reputation of invincibility that French armies had enjoyed.
