  1. 1

How did faction operate under Mary?

    Model answer

Stephen Gardiner, Lord Chancellor, favoured an English marriage to Courtenay and rapid persecution of heretics, while William Paget promoted the Habsburg match and resisted the revival of the heresy laws, so the Council was divided on the central issues of the reign.

  2. 2

How was the succession settled in 1558?

    Model answer

Mary, dying childless in November 1558 after the loss of Calais, at last acknowledged her half-sister Elizabeth as her heir, and the throne passed without violence.

  3. 3

What were the main religious changes under Somerset?

    Model answer

The royal injunctions of 1547 and the dissolution of the chantries, the repeal of the heresy laws and the Act of Six Articles, the legalising of clerical marriage and communion in both kinds, and the first Act of Uniformity of 1549 imposing Cranmer's Prayer Book.

  4. 4

How did the 1552 Prayer Book differ from that of 1549?

    Model answer

It was unambiguously Protestant, replacing the altar with a communion table, removing prayers for the dead and traditional vestments, and using words of administration that treated the sacrament as a memorial; the Black Rubric denied that kneeling implied adoration.

  5. 5

How far had England become Protestant by 1553?

    Model answer

Official doctrine was Protestant and the Forty-Two Articles had been issued, but evidence from wills, churchwardens' accounts and parish inventories suggests genuine conversion was largely confined to London, the south-east and a few towns and ports.

  6. 6

    How did Mary restore Catholicism?

    Model answer

The first Statute of Repeal in 1553 returned worship to its state in 1547, the heresy laws were revived in 1554, the second Statute of Repeal in 1555 restored papal supremacy, and Cardinal Pole returned as legate and later archbishop to reform and reeducate the clergy.
