Summarise what the post-war peace settlements decided for the region.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Summarise what the post-war peace settlements decided for the region.
Model answer
The San Remo conference of 1920 allotted the mandates, the treaty imposed on the Ottomans attempted to dismember Turkey, and the settlement of 1923 recognised the Turkish republic instead, leaving the Arab lands under British and French mandates rather than independent.
- 2
How did Britain govern the Palestine Mandate?
Model answer
Through a High Commissioner and an appointed administration bound by mandate terms that obliged Britain both to facilitate the Jewish national home and to safeguard the rights of the Arab population, a dual obligation it never managed to reconcile.
- 3
Why was Transjordan treated differently from Palestine?
Model answer
Britain detached it in 1922 from the area in which the Jewish national home was to be established and installed Abdullah as its ruler under light supervision, gaining a cheap and stable client with a British-officered Arab Legion.
- 4
Explain the part British oil companies played in policy.
Model answer
The Anglo-Persian company secured Persian oil and the Iraq Petroleum Company the Kirkuk field with a pipeline to Haifa, and because the government held the controlling stake in Anglo-Persian, commercial and strategic interests reinforced each other.
- 5
How did Britain manage Faisal and Iraq?
Model answer
After the costly revolt of 1920 the Cairo conference of 1921 made Faisal king, treaties in 1922 and 1930 secured Britain air bases, advisers and control of foreign policy, and the formal independence granted in 1932 left that influence largely intact.
- 6
What solutions did Britain propose for the conflict between Arabs and Jews in Palestine?
Model answer
A legislative council that both communities rejected, partition into Jewish and Arab states recommended by the Peel Commission in 1937, the abandonment of partition as unworkable in 1938, and then the 1939 White Paper's limits on immigration and land sales.
